The Cub Cadet Ultima Series Z1 42 is an entry-level zero-turn mower that brings genuine zero-turn speed and agility to homeowners ready to step up from a traditional lawn tractor. Its standout feature is the proprietary IntelliPOWER engine, a 547cc single-cylinder unit with an electronic governor that actively monitors and adjusts power output to deliver up to 18% more available power compared to a standard 547cc engine, resulting in noticeably less bogging down when pushing through tall, thick, or wet grass. Combined with a top forward speed of 7 mph, it covers ground up to 25% faster than a comparable lawn tractor, making a real difference in total mowing time on larger properties.
The 42-inch stamped steel cutting deck features smooth arc dual blades, a deep dome design for superior airflow and clipping discharge, two anti-scalp gauge wheels, and 15 height positions covering a range of 1 to 4.5 inches controlled by a convenient foot pedal and dial system. The zero turning radius means you can spin around obstacles, trees, and garden beds without the wide arcing passes a tractor requires, and the precision-offset front casters align with the blade edge for clean, tight trimming along borders and edges. The machine is built on a continuous 2×2 tubular steel frame designed to handle uneven terrain and heavy loads with stability, and it is engineered to handle slopes up to 15 degrees with confidence.
The Hydro-Gear EZT 2200 hydrostatic transmission is fully maintenance-free, requiring no fluid changes or servicing over its lifespan, and the electric PTO deck engagement makes blade startup smooth and simple. A large 3.5-gallon fuel tank keeps you mowing longer between fill-ups, the 18-inch high-back seat provides a comfortable operator position, and a built-in deck wash port simplifies underside cleaning after each use. For homeowners with one to three acres who want the efficiency and satisfaction of a zero-turn without a premium price tag, the Z1 42 makes a compelling and capable case.
